Insights about PBL

Throughout our last class discussion, I was able to brainstorm ways to create a lesson plan for project-based learning by incorporating many different subject areas. I also had the opportunity to view some outstanding thoughts about how my peers would create a PBL with various subject areas. There were some excellent ideas which included many different types of technology. One of the lesson plans I brainstormed involved using music to teach about the science concept of recycling and conservation.
What are your thoughts about PBL and please comment if you have any good ideas for PBL lessons that you have implemented with success!

  1. I think that project based learning is a fantastic way for teachers to hit so many different standards and still address students' individual interests and needs. I feel like this is a direction that all teachers should be heading because it is a way that all students' needs can be met. I find a strong liking for it because I have the pleasure and luck to be a co-teacher with another general education teacher which allows me to split my class into different projects and groups.

One example that our class is working on now is two different math projects. We have sixteen students all with very different math abilities so they are split into two groups - the enrichment group and the average group. The enrichment group is pulled out twice a week for thirty minutes and is doing a project that integrates social studies and math. They are planning a trip for their families to Washington, D.C. where they have to calculate mileage, time, money, etc. The second group is taken out once a week for thirty minutes to complete a project that integrates science and math. They are tracking the sunset and sunrise times and creating three different graphs to show how the length of the day changes and will do research to help explain why that change occurs.

  2. Sounds like you have PBL figured out!!! I think the hardest thing about it is differentiating the project to meet the needs of all learners.
